In late December, I took a short trip to Shirakawa-go in Gifu prefecture. This place is a UNESCO World Heritage site featuring farmhouses utilising Gassho-zukuri construction. These farmhouses feature steep thatched roofs, an architectural response to heavy snowfall during the harsh winter months.
It was snowing heavily during my visit, which was a new experience for me. Overall, it was a worthwhile trip even if I was not able to spend as much time in the village as I would have liked. Please enjoy the photos!
Finally, a splash of life in this harsh landscape. I think these were winterberries.
